What are Dental Cleaning and Oral Exams?
We offer dental cleaning and oral exams for children, teens and adults. Professional dental cleaning removes plaque and hard deposits (called tartar, or calculus) from the teeth and below the gumline that can’t be removed at home with just a toothbrush and floss. This helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease because if left in place, the deposits create the ideal conditions for bacteria to grow and multiply.
During oral exams, Dr. Harper and Dr. Hennessy check the health of your teeth and gums and perform an oral cancer screening. If necessary, a team member may also take low-dose, digital x-rays to get a full picture of your oral health. We always spend the time to answer any questions you may have and give you personalized recommendations for maximizing your oral hygiene routine.
Benefits of Cleanings & Oral Exams
Removes Plaque Buildup
We use special tools during cleanings to get rid of plaque and tartar buildup that can’t be removed at home. This reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
We can detect issues early on, ranging from cavities to oral cancer. At this stage, treatment will be less invasive and more likely to be effective.
Once we’ve closely evaluated your teeth and gums, we can offer personalized recommendations to improve your homecare routine and oral health.
What to Expect
At your dental cleaning and oral exam appointment, a team member will greet you and take you back for digital x-rays, if necessary. During your cleaning, a skilled, knowledgeable hygienist will floss your teeth, use a special tool to remove plaque and tartar, and then polish your teeth, so they’re smooth and shiny. For young patients, we may recommend a fluoride treatment to wrap things up.
Dr. Harper or Dr. Hennessy will then do a thorough exam and oral cancer screening. They’ll chat with you about their findings, including your x-rays, and answer your questions. While some people will need to see us more often in order to stay on top of problems like plaque buildup and gum disease, in general, everyone should have a cleaning and exam twice a year.
